The objective of the SPONGES project is to initiate a sustainable sponge industry in Europe by combining the efforts of innovative SMEs and leading scientific institutes. The project is expected to move the state of the art of sponge culture upwards from the level of a promising supply method to the level of a commercial process. SPONGES will strongly improve the competitive position of Europe within the field of marine biotechnology and is expected to generate new products for the market.
